Possible names for Album

Reflection

I Care

I like Reflection as it is a reflection of the album and the photo we want to capture is one with a mirror so it could look effective. We have decided as a group that we like Reflection and it will be a name of one of the songs on the album we are creating. Although we did like I Care as it is the name of the song we have chosen we wanted something different.

Music Video Analysis- Katy Perry Last Friday Night

Cinematography
We are introduced to the video with an establishing shot of an American suburb. This is followed by a cut to inside showing a close up of a chicken. A pan shot shows us around and then cuts to a long establishing shot of the bedroom. The story has a reversed narrative as we see the morning after the party before we see the scenes of a party. Shot reverse shot is used to show conversation as Kathy (Katy Perry) doesn’t know what had happened. Mid shot reaction shot to show Kathy’s face when she realises she had a party. Tilts and pan shots show the trashed bedroom before the artist starts singing. Mid shots and long shots are used when Kathy is singing showing the location and confusion in Kathy’s face. Close up of the laptop to show crazy reckless photos from the night before, helps Kathy to try and remember what happened the night before. Reaction shot shows the sadness in Kathy’s face. This is followed by more medium close ups of Kathy singing. A long shot shows what her bedroom looked like before. Long shot of a party outside. Low angle long shot is used to show Kathy knocking on her neighbour’s door showing she is the powerful one for going and knocking on the door. Over the shoulder mid shot show the girl opening the door. Rebecca Black is well known so relates to the popular character she is playing. Mid shot reaction shot of Kathy when she sees the party inside. Medium close up of another geek staring at Kathy this suggests that only geeks fancy other geeks. Close ups are used in the fantasy to show the loving between the two geeks. Close up of feet as Kathy walks down the stairs. Follow by reaction shots to show everyone face at the transformation. Medium shot of the jock leaving the popular girl for Kathy. Medium long shots are used to show Kathy and Rebecca playing a dancing game. And then of her singing in the centre of the screen so the audience know it is the same person. Shot reverse shot is used to show them dancing and then to show the game that they are playing. Medium and long shots showing people dancing and having a good time. Close up reaction shots to show Kathy very happy. Long shot to show everyone in the garden partying. Long shots and medium close ups of the man on the saxophone and panning on the other people playing instruments in the garden. Close ups of Kathy being sick reaction shot to her drinking alcohol. Medium long shot of the jock grabbing Kathy’s bum, followed by an over shoulder shot of geek standing up for Kathy. Long shot is used when the geek beats the jock. This is followed by the reality with mid shots and long shots. A close of Kathy is used showing her sing the last few lyrics. Reaction shot of her upset about the photos. Mid shots reaction shots as the parents open the door to her trashed bedroom. Shot reverse shot following the conversation.
Editing
As the establishing shot falls down from a high angle Capitol records, the production company, the artist name and the song title appear in the middle of the screen as if it were a film. A cut is used to take us inside the house. Cuts are used to take us from different shots. They are fast paced and change to the beat of the song. A cut is used to show the bruise on her neck which relates to the lyrics in the song. A blur transition takes us to the night before suggesting that everything that happened was a blur and can’t remember. There is a cut to take us outside to the party. Fast paced cuts take us inside and outside to show people having a good time and Kathy getting frustrated over the noise. Another blur takes us to a dream/ fantasy. Cuts are used to take us to Kathy singing in her bedroom then back to the party from the night before. Fast paced cuts and shot reverse shots show them getting dressed up for the party. Cuts showing the party downstairs, getting Kathy read in Rebecca’s room and Kathy singing in her own room. Fast cuts to fight to the pace of the music. Cuts from the party to reaction shots. We then cut back to out in the garden. Cut from outside to Kathy’s bedroom the party has moved. A blur transition takes us back to the fantasy/ dream of the geek beating the jock. The last shot turns into a photo on the laptop. There is a continuity error as Kathy goes to bed as hot 80’s chick but wakes up as a geek. A star zoom to Kathy’s face finishes the video and the end appears followed by credits as if this was a mini film.
Mise-en-scene
Locations:
American suburb very stereotypical as it looks very pretty, girly and a nice place to live. The bedroom is very girly, pink and fluffy. Although it has been trashed so suggests there was a party. Rebecca’s house trashed from the party, cups everywhere paper chains. Garden is trashed there is a band, balloon flamingos and people partying.

Costumes: we first see Katy Perry as a geek, big glasses, braces and dungarees very stereotypical. Very 80’s bright block colours. Before the transformation the jock looks at Kathy like she is ugly but after he follows her because she looks sexy this is stereotypical of the jock. Jock interested in the blonde popular pretty girl. Kathy’s second outfit is very figure hugging and short in bright block colours with heels. This makes her look sexy and attracts the male target audience. It also attracts the people who think they are geeks and ugly because she is transformed and they will aspire to be like her. In the fantasy they are dressed up as a prince and princess like a video game.

Music video Analysis- Best thing I never had Beyoncé

Cinematography and Narrative
We are introduced to the video with a medium long shot of Beyoncé. There are then a mixture of shots including close up, medium close up and high angle to show the emotion and to get a clear understanding of what is happening before the verse starts. The camera shots are mainly close-ups and medium shots show the emotion in her face, which show how she feels to the lyrics in the song. As we enter the chorus she puts her veil on and the actions reflect on the lyrics she is singing she is very happy and smiling. . We then get a side on mid shot of her outside suggesting that her wedding is going to be soon as she now has her dress on and the sun is bright relating to the emotions of the artist. a low angel to make it seem like she has won and she is more powerful and better off without the man she thought she loved. He is portrayed to be a ‘jerk’ looking at other girls when he was supposed to be with her. As she walks away and up the stairs it makes it look like she is the more powerful person even though it is a high angel shot which could suggest the low point/ break up in their relationship. We then cut back to the shot of her in her wedding dress running away from the camera suggesting that she’s happy she ran away from him and started a better life without him. We then cut back to the side on medium close up to show her facial expressions and how happy she is that she’s not with him anymore. We then get a shot that tilts from bottom to the top of her dress as she walks down the aisle and we also have a wide shot to see the people smiling at the happy occasion. Mid shots are used to show her happiness and emotion whilst singing. Also a back view when she is walking down the aisle. There are low angle shots in the flash back and also a close up of the old boyfriend to show his facial expression and emotion once she had gone. We then have a change of scenery and there is a medium long shot to get the background in. We then get a close up of Beyoncé as she reaches the end of the aisle. Close up of the exchange of rings. Reaction shot of the bridesmaids smiling and the friends and family cheering after the rings. Wide shot to show her new husband pulling of the stocking. Mid shots to show the happiness in the room of the groom and the guests. Medium long shots used to show them dancing. Camera turns as the groom picks up the bride. Reaction shots to show the happiness on everyone’s faces. Medium long shot as Beyoncé walks back into the wedding and leaving behind the memories of the old boyfriend.

Editing
The video starts with a fade in to the room where Beyoncé is. A cut away shot is used to take us to another part of the video. We then get a flashback video of how she was when she was with her boyfriend in her teens. Cut away shots are used often to take us back to the video and to take us onto the next part. We cut away to Beyoncé singing away from the wedding. Cut back to the flashback to show her walking away and it relates to the lyrics as she says “i bet it sucks to be you right now” because she is happy. Cut away from the outside to the solo singing this is a medium close up. Cutaway from the bride to the rings. Cut back out the room from the dance. A fade is used to end the video.

Mise-en-scene
The mise-en scene in this shot is very innocent as it is all white, bedding, walls, flowers, clothing and bright lighting. She is dressed in lingerie and her hair is tied back in a neat bun. With all the white accessories it suggests that it is her wedding day. She is dressed in her wedding dress throughout the video. The change of scenery is outside the wedding room and she is alone. It is green and bright to show that everything is better/ fresh as she reflects on the old times. Inside all white flowers, glasses, white decoration, another white dress and bright lighting.

Sound
The soundtrack starts straight away; there is no need for a narrative at the beginning as the mise-en-scene makes it clear what is going on.

Music Video Analysis- One Direction That's What Makes You Beautiful

Cinematography
We are introduced to the video with an establishing shot showing a beach. This location becomes the main location throughout the video. Then we see a fast paced cut to a close up of a hand tapping to the beat of the song with the beach fading in the background. We then see long crane shot of the band, throwing stones into the sea and there is a camper van parked along from them. Then there is a tracking Ariel shot of the cliff side, showing the location of the video. We then see the group using a long shot walking along the beach we saw in the establishing shot. This is followed by numerous medium close us of the group members singing. Showing each member allows the audience to realise who is singing what part and who is actually in the group. Extreme long tracking shots are used to follow the camper van along the cliff side this tells the audience that they are going to the beach and also establishing where they are at that time. Throughout the video we get a lot more shots of the car suggesting that they are on a journey to find something or someone. We continue to have the medium close ups of the group members singing. We also get medium long shots of the group members dancing and jumping around on the beach whilst singing. Singing and dancing is conventional of a pop music video. There is a medium close up of a girl flicking her hair this relates to the lyrics in the song. As well as the camper van shots there is a long tracking shot of the group of girls in a beetle. This suggests that they are going to the same beach and meeting up with the boy group. We begin to see a new shot, low angle long shot, of the group on a balcony on the beach. This suggests that they are more powerful then the girls or they have found what they were looking for. There is also panning shots and low angle shots when they are walking along the beach. We then have a low angle shot with both of the cars next to each other, this suggests that they have now met and the low angle shot suggests that they are on a equal level of power.

Editing
In the establishing shot, the director’s name is placed in the bottom left corner. The shot looks like the colour has been edited to make the sunrise lookj more effective. The cuts in the video are very fast paced to stick to the tempo and the beat of the song. in the middle of the song we have a slower verse therefore the cuts have slowed down but when the beat drops the cuts change quicker. Fading transitions are also used throughout the video to move from different cuts. This is conventional of a pop music video. Towards the end of the video, there is an edit of 2 scenes overlapping with them both slightly faded. This can represent parallel narratives.

Mise-en-Scene
Locations: The main location for this video is on beach. This is a very conventional location for pop videos as it’s seen as glamorous, relaxing and indicates summer holidays. As the group is young boys it can suggest that they are on their first boys holiday. The location could attract both the male and female target audience but mainly the female audience has it has a “summer loving” vibe to it and that is what they want when they are the groups age. The other location is the cliff side this is where we saw the boy group and the girls journey to the beach.. The location is quite summery and relaxing, which would attract their target audience as it can be seen as romantic. The lighting used in the video is mainly natural lighting as it is shot during the day on a sunny beach.

Costume: The group is dressed quite casual, fashionable spring/summer clothes, which relate to the theme and location of the video. They are also dressed in similar colours and outfits which is very conventional for a pop video. However, they still have their own recognisable styles such as their hair. The girls are also dressed in a fashionably but they are more summery than the boys. They are wearing shorts, hats, sandals and bikinis which will attract the male audience as they look a bit sexy. Towards the end of the video, everyone is wearing jumpers, this shows that the day is coming to an end and it is starting to get chilly.
